'Downton Abbey' Is Becoming a Movie with Original Cast!

Get excited!

Downton Abbey is returning so get excited! Though Downton Abbey isn't technically based on a book, creator Julie Fellowes revealed that he was inspired by a book when he began creating the series so, technicalities aside, this is pertinent news!

Rumors of a revival have been floating around for a few years but the news became official last week when the official Downton Abbey Facebook page announced that a Downton Abbey movie was in the works!

The good news is it's in good hands. Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes will write the screenplay while Brian Percival, who directed the series pilot, has signed on as director. The film will be produced by Focus Features and Carnival Films.

To make it even better, many original cast members are rumored to be reprising their roles in the Downton Abbey movie. The original cast who is slated to return includes: Maggie Smith (Violet Crawley), Hugh Bonneville (Robert Crawley), Elizabeth McGovern (Cora Crawley), Michelle Dockery (Mary Crawley), Laura Carmichael (Edith Crawley), and Joanne Foggatt (Anna Bates).

Whether the film will pick up where the series ended or will jump forward in the future is unclear. Regardless of the films direction, the production team will certainly have a lot to work with.

The series finale saw the resolution of many storylines and happy endings for a majority of the cast. The final season saw the weddings of at least four major characters, easy storylines for the film to follow up on.

The popular Masterpiece series was widely successful during its run, earning 3 Golden Globe awards, 15 Emmys (and 69 nominations!), and a BAFTA. With Fellowes on board alongside the original cast, we're sure the film will uphold the popularity and artistic masterpiece of the Downton Abbey series.

Gareth Neame, Executive Chairman of Carnival Films, certainly agreed, saying:

“When the television series drew to a close it was our dream to bring the millions of global fans a movie and now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production. Julian’s script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival’s hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as Downton comes to the big screen.”
