The 1998 original featured the vocal talents of Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, Miguel Ferrer, and BD Wong, while legendary star Jackie Chan voiced Chinese dubs of the film, which grossed $304.3 million worldwide.

Disney was determined to find an actress who was both young and of Chinese decent, and after thousands of auditions, Liu Yifei landed the role. The actress has an extensive resume of films, including The Forbidden Kingdom and Ip Man 3.
