Lily James and Armie Hammer to Star in Adaptation of ‘Rebecca’

Daphne de Maurier's thriller was first adapted by Alfred Hitchcock

Variety reports that Lily James and Armie Hammer will star in a new adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca. The film is being produced by Netflix and Working Title and will be directed by Ben Wheatley.

Rebecca was originally adapted by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940. He also brought to life du Maurier’s other famous works such as Jamaica Inn and The Birds.

The Gothic classic follows a newly married young woman who battles the shadow of her husband’s deceased first wife. In spite of her absence, the mysterious Rebecca still haunts the house with her memory and nearly drives the bride to insanity.

Hitchcock's 1940 classic holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so a remake has rather large shoes to fill.

The screenplay will be written by Jane Goldman and production is expected to start in the Spring.
