Harry Potter creator chose an unconventional medium to write her story

J.K. Rowling, always on the cutting edge of popular literature, has revealed a new trick up her very wide sleeve: a manuscript written entirely on a dress.

In an interview with CNN, Rowling revealed that she wrote the peculiar manuscript for her 50th Birthday Party. The theme of that party? “Come as your own private nightmare. And I went as a lost manuscript,” Rowling dished.

On a more serious note, Rowling discussed the origins of Harry Potter’s story—specifically his cooped-up existence in the cupboard in the home of his callous aunt and uncle. Pregnant with her daughter, Rowling came across a newspaper story about a Czech orphanage “where this boy, among many other children with special needs, was being kept, I would say, at least 20 hours out of 24 in a cage-bed.” Horrified by the thought of being kept enclosed, voiceless and hopeless of relief, Rowling would eventually draw from the story to envision Harry’s life before Hogwarts.

She would also go on to found the charity Lumos, an organization dedicated to helping children escape institutionalization around the world.

As one of the creators of the fabric of modern pop culture, it seems fitting that Rowling would choose to write on a piece of clothing.
