Never-Before-Seen Beatrix Potter Story to Be Published

Beatrix Potter has given children’s literature some of its most iconic stories. Now, more than 70 years after her death, she’s giving us one more story. The Tale of Kitty-in-Boots, a story that Potter began more than 100 years ago but never finished before her death, will finally be published this September.

According to the Guardian, Potter first sent her publisher some details of The Tale of Kitty-in-Boots in 1914 - more than 100 years ago. Her archives include three handwritten drafts of the story, a typewritten manuscript, and rough sketches of the protagonist (above) and villain. In addition to the new characters, the story will feature familiar Potter characters like Peter Rabbit.

Real-world distractions, including two World Wars, kept Potter from finishing the book before she passed away in 1943. But the project was revived two years ago, when Potter’s original 1914 letter was discovered.

Now the story will finally reach readers. Since Potter won’t be able to illustrate the story herself, her publisher has recruited Quentin Blake - the illustrator famous for giving Roald Dahl’s books their distinctive look. The Tale of Kitty-in-Boots will be published on September 1 of this year, coinciding with its author's 150th birthday.
