10 Surprisingly Optimistic Friedrich Nietzsche Quotes

To get you through life.

I’ll lay it right out there: I have a very casual, armchair knowledge of philosophy. I got an A in my introduction to philosophy class, though, but it’s also the last philosophy class I took. I do like reading Wikipedia pages on philosophy and philosophers, though. What I do know about Friedrich Nietzsche is probably about what most people curious about him know: he’s all about nihilism and existentialism...right?

Well, sort of. His work, to a large extent, touches upon nihilism (which most people would probably define as “the depressing philosophy”), and is a big influence on existentialist philosophers. But he also talks about a million other things like art, music, and a lot a lot a lot about Christianity. Basically, Nietzsche is not a figure you can easily pin down and fit into a category. Though popular conception may be that he’s a bit of a downer, he’s actually an incredibly motivational and spirited thinker in his own right. Here are just ten surprisingly optimistic things Nietzsche gave to us.

1. You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star.

2. He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.

3. And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.

4. You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.

5. Without music, life would be a mistake.

6. We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once.

7. It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.

8. There is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness.

9. When we are tired, we are attacked by ideas we conquered long ago.

10. That which does not kill us makes us stronger.
